A chemotherapy agent that has the ability to inhibit transcription; binds to DNA at the transcription initiation complex and preventing elongation of RNA chain by RNA polymerase; can also interfere with DNA replication; leads to the accumulation of transcriptionally active p53 in the nucleus of HeLa, CaSki, and SiHa cells.
