A cell-permeable mitochondrial calcium uptake inhibitor that binds to mitochondria with high affinity (Kd=340 pM) and blocks Ca2+ uptake into mitochondria in vitro with IC50 of 184 pM; inhibits the flow of calcium into mitochondria and prevents the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, improves cardiac post-ischaemic functional recovery in rats in vivo.
